Today’s teens are growing up in a world of constant comparison. Social media can create pressure to look a certain way, achieve more, maintain friendships perfectly, and always appear happy or successful. For many teens, this contributes to anxiety, low self-esteem, perfectionism, and emotional overwhelm.
While social media itself is not inherently “bad,” it can become emotionally exhausting when self-worth becomes tied to validation, appearance, or comparison. Many teens report feeling “not good enough” after spending time online, even when they logically know what they are seeing is filtered or unrealistic.
Helping teens develop a stronger sense of identity outside of social media is important. Therapy can support teens in building confidence, emotional resilience, healthier coping skills, and greater awareness of how social media impacts mood and self-esteem.
